Occasionally I take a stroll down memory lane and look at past blog entries. Then I realize how, um, nice our apartment looks. Like, the computer chair that now doubles as Lu's high chair. I'm finally starting to get sick of living like a college kid. Tom keeps telling me that someday we'll have grown-up furniture...
Unfortunately, having both chosen the academic path in life I think that grown up furniture is still in the far far future. I have to keep reminding my father that we're PhDs, not MDs. I need to keep reminding myself of that too.
Furniture aside, I think we are going to buy a house. We're very excited/nauseous. I'd much rather have an empty house than a nicely furnished apartment any day!

An exercise in patience
Lu has really impressed me this past week. Not only has he been behaving while sleeping in his big boy bed (e.g not getting up in the middle of the night to cause mayhem), he's also been staying in his room until 6:30am which is when his light turns on.
You see Lu's an early bird and I'm not. So, a couple of weeks ago I found a light timer on clearance at Target and Tom thought we should see if it would help Lu stay in bed longer. Soooooooo, we started using the timer and explained to little Lu that he needs to stay in bed until his light turns on in the morning. Lo and behold, he actually waits for it!!!! Of course he waits laying on the floor in front of his door occasionally whining "mommy daddy mommy daddy light light", but he waits! Who would've thought a 2 year-old could patiently wait for a good 15 minutes for a darn light to turn on? I didn't. But, as soon as that light comes on watch out. He runs into our room yelling "Daddy up! Daddy get up! Morning! Light! Daddy Mommy Daddy!".
I'll take 6:30a over 5a any day. Actually, he didn't get up until 7a this morning, light turning on and all.
So far Project Big Boy Bed has been a success.

Big boy bed
Yes. Another milestone. What a crazy week!
I finally found a bed rail that was small enough to fit Lu's crib (Marshall's, $12!). So now he has a big boy bed! He did great last night. He went to sleep fine and at 6:30am I heard his bedroom door open, pitter patter pitter patter, our bedroom door open, and a cute little silhouette saying "hi!".
Nap today was a different story, but he eventually fell asleep for 2 hours. Can't wait for those midnight visits!

The really funny part is that while I was out buying this bed rail Tom was at goodwill buying two bedrails for $5. His were for a twin size bed though, so it's pooh bear (plus some rope to hold it in place) for now.

Happy Easter!
Happy Easter everybody! This is Lu's first Easter and boy was it fun. Technically he's been alive for two other Easters, but this is the first we've actually celebrated. He was only a week old for the first Easter and I was not about to celebrate anything. Last year Easter fell the day before his birthday and I only got around to celebrating that, not Easter. But this year we actually got around to celebrating! Woohoo!
We dyed some eggs on Saturday.

Lu did an excellent job. You can tell by his blue hands.

Look what the Easter bunny brought!

The Easter bunny was also kind enough to hide 24 plastic eggs filled with teddy grahams all around the house. The blue ones were extra special; they each had a reeses peanut butter egg. Mmmmm...my favorite.
Lucius did an excellent job finding all of the eggs. Especially since they all had cookies in them.
"more eggs? more eggs? cookies?"

Oh where oh where did my baby go!
Lu had some milestones (or perhaps just new behaviors) this week. While I was cooking dinner on Tuesday I caught him counting "4, 5, 6, 7". And I asked "Are you counting!?Where did you learn that? Daycare?!"* He can now count from one to ten. Well, with a little help from me ;)
The next morning I called out to Tom, "Tom!" And wouldn't you know that Lu picked up on it right away. "Tom! Tom! Tom!"...all morning long. I asked if Tom was his new friend and he said "yep". Don't worry, he's back to saying Daddy.
He's really started calling his friends by their first names: Conna (Connor) and Ando (Andrew). His BFF is Connor. They started daycare around the same time (~5 months old) and they've been inseparable since. Lu will be on the playground and just start yelling "Conna! Conna!" looking all around for his little friend. He's going to miss Conna, that's for sure.
He has too many words now to count and he's started putting two and sometimes three words together. What amazing times! His 2nd birthday is quickly approaching and it makes me wonder what in the world happened to the past 2 years? I'm sure the next 16 will be the same.
*I blame everything on daycare: the good, the bad, and the ugly. It's great.
Oh, what am I going to do without them! I can't even begin to think about it. I'll have to call them everyday to see what the activities are so I can do the same.

St. Patrick's Day Parade
On Sunday we ventured out to attend New Haven's St. Patrick's Day Parade. It's the sixth oldest parade in the country! Unfortunately it was reaalllly windy and reallly cold. We lasted about 45 minutes and then Lu kept asking to go home ("home, home"). March in CT is still cold. Who knew?
However, I really felt bad for the men in kilts. Especially when the wind blew.

The highs and lows of this past week
The highs: The week started off with a fun playdate. The kids entertain themselves (aka repeatedly jumping off the couch) while the parents chat. What's better than that?

Cheese!

Lu found my hidden stash of...

Chocolate!!!!

Lucius is talking more and more...and making me crack up in the process. He has recently started saying "um, um" when he can't find the word he's looking for. And he can now say three words in a row -- "No my [insert object]". And he correctly identified 2 letters! He showed me the letter A and said "ah" and the letter K and said "ka". Yes, he only knows the phonetic alphabet thanks to "The Letter Factory". And who says that "PB" (TV) isn't educational?

The lows:
On Thursday I attended Uncle Alan's funeral. Obviously it was a sad occasion, but also one filled with mixed emotions. The funeral took place at the VA Home and Hospital in Rocky Hill. Family, friends, and hospital staff attended the service. Through stories from his veteran friends and the hospital nurses we know that he was a popular figure at the VA. But, is that really a surprise?! Uncle Alan was always the life of the party and very generous man...probably to a fault. In the end, he was allowed 2 shots of Whiskey a day and the nurses were in the process of getting him a lobster dinner (his favorite).
Since he served in the Korean War, he received a military burial. It was a beautiful day and at the end of the service, everyone gathered around to sing Alouette and You Are My Sunshine. Too moving for words.
I'll always remember him as the Uncle that sat in a chair with a drink in his hand telling dirty jokes and swearing up a storm. The best type of Uncle really ;) To him, I was Charlie and Cindy (my sister) was Sam. I have no idea where those nicknames came from, but that's what he always used. While he told a great a story, he made for a great story too.
Uncle Alan, you'll be greatly missed!
Much love to you -- Charlie
